Every day at Selfhelp is an opportunity to become a part of our volunteer family. Wherever your talents lie or whatever your interests are we can find a place for you here. The contribution you make by volunteering is invaluable to our residents as well as to yourself. If you are interested in becoming part of our volunteer family, please complete the form below and we will contact you for an interview.
Mitzvah Mensches
A meaningful mitzvah project for a 12 or 13 year old can be the highlight of the special milestone of becoming a bar/bat mitzvah. Learn about yourself while making a difference in somebody’s life. There are many ways to connect with The Selfhelp Home through Tikkun Olam (helping to repair the world). Click here to learn more!
Shabbat Volunteers
We are always looking for trained laypeople (or clergy) to join our residents in leading Kabbalat Shabbat services Friday afternoons at 4:30 pm or people who know the Shabbat blessings (candles, kiddush and hamotzi) to lead these blessings at Shabbat dinner at 5:30 pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to get to know our residents and do a real mitzvah. You and your family would be our guests for a delicious Shabbat dinner, given COVID-19 protocols are not in place.
Gardening
If you have a love for plants and flowers come and help during our garden club that meets once a week during the Spring and Summer months. Lead us by sharing your knowledge about gardening or just listen with a resident. Either way you will enjoy an afternoon outside on our rooftop garden.
Board Games
Do you enjoy playing board games? Attend or run an evening game night with residents. All games are welcome such as scrabble, rummiKub, Cards, Poker, etc.
Knitting or Crocheting with Residents
Do you love to knit or crochet? Whether you’re interested in showing others how to knit, you want to learn from other residents or just don’t want to knit alone, come and join other residents and knit together! Come and learn from others, be an expert and share a technique or just come for the company.
Friendly Animal Visits
Bring your pup (or other pet) to visit with residents.
