Chicago, IL - Nov. 23, 2011 - The Selfhelp Home, a continuing care retirement community on Chicago's North Side, has won 1st place in its category in the City of Chicago's 55th Annual Mayor's Landscape Awards program.

The Selfhelp Home's garden was judged to be the most beautiful container garden in the city wide competition sponsored each year by the Mayor and Chicago Environmental Department. A container garden is a garden challenged by space constraints and using mostly containers, including porches, rooftop decks and window boxes.

"The effort you have given through tending your landscape represents a significant commitment to your neighborhood and the whole city," the city wrote in a letter to The Selfhelp Home. "Gardens and other green spaces help improve air quality, utilize rainwater and make Chicago a beautiful place to live."

Residents ranging in age from 85 to 99 design, plant and care for the garden. It spans the rooftop of the nine story building in more than 40 containers. Marion Mayer, member of the Garden Club, observes: "We are probably the oldest group of gardeners to achieve a first prize garden and perhaps the first elderly care facility to do so in the 55 year history of the awards."

"Our garden club raises the spirit of all our residents," said Hedy Ciocci, administrator of The Selfhelp Home. "It gives everyone in our care something they can care about and plenty of fresh air along with some exercise."

The award will be presented on December 3rd at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Chicago.

The Selfhelp Home is an active and engaging not-for-profit senior living community designed to accommodate the needs of elderly Jewish residents throughout the Chicago area. Residents are able to:
  • Live independently,
  • Receive assisted living services in the comfort of their own apartment
  • Obtain comprehensive skilled nursing and rehabilitative care
  • Access a full continuum of state-of-the-art health care services onsite
